Holiday housing handover: New homes for Mau Mau beneficiaries

The City is thrilled to hand over 12 homes at its Gugulethu Infill housing project today, 15 December 2025. The Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes were handed over to qualifying beneficiaries of the Mau Mau section of the project this week.

The Gugulethu Infill housing project will deliver 1 004 homes to qualifying beneficiaries and their families. This is made up of 570 units at the Gugulethu Erf 8448 site and 434 at Mau Mau in Nyanga.

‘It is always so special to give the keys to their new homes to our beneficiaries. This handover is even more meaningful to us as it means these beneficiaries will be celebrating the festive season in their new homes.

‘The project has experienced several challenges, including contractor issues, Covid-19-related delays, extortion attempts, unlawful occupation of partially completed units at the Mau Mau portion of the project and vandalism to work already completed. We have done everything possible to fight against these challenges and are now delivering to the people who deserve these opportunities

‘Our teams are committed to completing the Gugulethu Infill housing project for the beneficiaries and their families as soon as possible. Thank you to all stakeholders, including our communities, City teams and project steering committees for their hard work. We are so pleased to see this project become a success,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.

Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
